Top 5 Custom Vanities & Kitchen Islands in Our Old House

When we first purchased this property back in 2022 it was full to the brim of old worn down previously loved things. We were able to give some of them a second life in this renovation project creating stylish and unique features special for the home. Take a look at the top 5 ways we were able to upcycle.

1 . Small Vanity for Small Spaces

When we're working in a small space we like to create the sense that the room is bigger than it is. This particular bathroom gets its view of extra space from having open space under the vanity, creating more room for the eye to see. It also fits nicely into this odd shaped corner area that we might not have otherwise known what to do with. This vanity appears to have been made out of an old dresser drawer with a reclaimed wood top to match the refinished floors that are carried throughout the whole house.

We're loving how this old cabinet was transformed into another tiny space solution. The reclaimed wood countertops and cabinetry stained to match the floors really ties in the space. This cabinet was brought into the property but the shelf above the toilet was found and salvaged from amongst the clutter.

2. Unique Kitchen Island Made from the old General Store Counter

Speaking of reclaimed, this kitchen island is one of our "proud parent" moments of this project. This was found inside the home upon purchase, and had always been destined to be utilized in this way. We just adore having original features restored. In it's previous life it could have been used as a counter in the general store/post office for the historic Hartsville neighborhood.

3. Stylish Painted Crate

Another interesting technique is to think outside the box! This was an old crate with the lettering already painted on it and found on the property. We saw the potential in using this a a foundation for another pedestal sink in a small space. All the items that were used in this particular project was found on the property, and proved to be a cost effective way of adding in unique character to an otherwise plain space that can be forgotten about like a bathroom. However, in keeping most everything plain it allows the stylized sinks to stand out. Not much was done to this project except adding the touch of raw wood as a countertop and staining everything to match. Then installing it in it's forever home!

4. The French Provincial Buffet Table

This was an old French Provincial also known as French Country buffet table or sideboard dated as early as the 1700s. Older than the home itself! This was brought into the home, to add some more storage. Even though this piece is a little earlier it still fits in with the home's overall aesthetic. On the door you'll find a partial ladder that was found on the property and repurposed to be a towel rack.

5. The Repurposed Workbench

As you can see from this post the designer of this space allowed herself to be creative with the little details and this is evident throughout the whole home, and perhaps those details will be for another post. Last but not least, featured in this post is this double sink workbench again found on the property and repurposed. The top was finished with sanding and a stain, and the bottom painted to match the clawfoot tub.

We hope that this article has opened your perspectives and given you some inspiration in what can actually be used as a sink base. When we got the house it was filled to the brim with junk. But some of it was able to be salvaged and reused to add unique features as displayed in this article.
